Playing to Win One of the CIAA Tournament’s leading organizers details the event’s success
The last week in February has come to represent a busy and exciting time in Charlotte. For the fifth consecutive year, the CIAA Tournament is taking place, February 23-27, bringing with it a weeklong of basketball games at Time Warner Cable Arena, fan events at the Charlotte Convention Center, and dozens of parties and networking events throughout the city. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the only museum dedicated to the exhibition of mid-20th-century modern art in the southeastern United States, celebrated its grand opening on January 2. As part of the celebration, admission was free on opening day. Above is a photo from the Bechtler’s ribbon cutting ceremony. Rooms to Go The Charlotte area saw the opening of several new hotels last year, but can we fill them?
In the past year in the Charlotte area, roughly ten new hotels either opened their doors or began construction. And at least two others plan to start building this year. You’d think we aren’t in the midst of a recession. But for this particular business within the hospitality industry, decisions on development are made on such a long-term basis that they don’t necessarily reflect the current climate. I have a lot to talk about this month. And although each experience was very different, they were all related.
First up, on January 18, I had the wonderful opportunity to present the first Mary Margaret Traxler Award/Scholarship at NACE’s Annual Awards Dinner. To limit the number of teary eyes in the room, Cortenay Matthers and the folks at NACE kept my speech short and sweet. I have to admit that when it comes to technology, I struggle and am constantly working to improve.
We live in an electronic society where face-to-face communication seems to happen less and less. Business today requires being up to speed with the latest technology, including social media.
